If you scroll through a brand or influencer Instagram account, you’ll probably notice that all of the images have a very similar colour and lighting style.

You might find that they all have a light and airy feel, a pink tone to every image or the blues are all the same hue.

This doesn’t happen by accident, they simply use a preset.

If you haven’t heard of them before, presets are adjustments settings to create a particular style or look on your images.

With one click, you can completely transform your image while speeding up your workflow.

An average person on Instagram will spend 3 seconds looking at a feed to determine if they like it or not.

Whether you are creating a personal or business brand, you only have 3 seconds to show what your page is about. Is it about travel, fashion, fun, romantic, moody etc?

How do you find the perfect preset?

Before you start thinking about what preset you need, you need to pick a theme or style for your images.

Look through your pictures and look for any commonalities. Do you shoot a lot of blues, greens or pinks? Are your photos very neutral and white?

If you don’t see any consistencies, you might want to think about how you would want your images to look and what colours are you most drawn to.

If you are looking for a preset for a business, you will need to think about your colour palette and how you could incorporate this into your images.

If you want to create a personal account, take a look at other Instagram feeds for inspiration.

What draws your attention the most? What do you like to see?

You may only be looking for a preset to adjust the light of your images, so they look bright and crisp or saturate the colours to make the image pop.

If you want all your pictures to be the same colour and hue, I would recommend a preset with a colour overlay. For example, you might want all your photos to look bright and pinky or brown and creamy.

How to use presets

Once you have found a preset to suit your style a personality, you will need to download and import it into Lightroom or Photoshop.

For those not familiar with Lightroom, it’s an application used to organise and edit your images. Lightroom for mobile is free, or if you have a subscription with Adobe, you can use it on your computer.

With a click of a button, you can apply the preset which will change the adjustment sliders that allow you to edit the image.

Not only does this save you a ton of time, but it will enable you to create images that look cohesive when put together on a website or social media feed.
